This paper focuses the plant anatomical entity branch of the PO, describing the organizing principles, resources available to users, and examples of comparative analyses. Crop Plant Trait Ontology Workshop Sept. 13th-15th, 2012, Corvallis, Or The Plant Ontology, along with the BBSRC, is organizing a workshop to develop ontology terms, definitions and applications for the major crop plants. Genome Informatics 2012 September 6-9 Robinson College, Cambridge, UK The twelfth Wellcome Trust Scientific Conferences/Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory conference on Genome Informatics will focus on large-scale genome informatics. Justin Preece will attend and present a Plant Ontology poster. Details here. New Release: July 2012 The latest release; version #18, is available on our Ontology Browser. Significant revisions include new upper-levels terms in the Plant Anatomical Entity branch for multi-tissue plant structures such as fruit and seed and their parts. In addition, 20 new terms were added, most of which describe meristems, and many other terms have been revised and updated. ICBO 2012: 3rd International Conference on Biomedical Ontology July 21st-25th, 2012, Graz, Austria Two presentations:"A plant disease extension of the Infectious Disease Ontology" (paper/oral presentation) and "Mapping of glossary terms from the Flora of North America to the Plant Ontology enhances both resources" (poster). Botany 2012 July 7-11th, 2012, Columbus, OH The PO will host a Plant Ontology Workshop on Sunday, July 8th. For more details, please visit the Botany 2012 Workshop Page. BioCuration 2012 April 2nd-4th, 2012, Washington, DC The PO will take part in the BioCuration 2012 meeting at Georgetown Univeristy and will present poster. We will also take part in the BioCreative-2012 Workshop. PAG 2012, Jan 14th-18th, 2012, San Diego,CA The PO will host an Ontology Workshop on Saturday morning, Jan. 14th. Come and listen to a variety of presentations about accessing and utilizing ontologies and web services, including the GO, Protein Ontology, the NCBO and the PO. There will be a short panel discussion at the end. On Saturday afternoon, the PO will present in the Non-seed Plant Workshop. On Sunday morning, Jan. 15th, we will take part in the Plant Phenotypes Workshop. We will also present a Computer Demo On Monday afternoon, Jan. 15th. Come visit us at the Outreach Booth in the Exhibit Hall. Times TBA. New Release The latest release of the PO, version #16a, is available on our Ontology Browser. This interim data releaes adds new annotations for Physcomitrella patens and updated annotations for Zea mays. There are no changes to the ontology relative to version #16. In collaboration with MaizeGDB, we have recently added ~1.5 million new associations between Plant Ontology terms and ~35,000 Zea mays gene models from the recent sequencing of the Maize genome. These associations are based on a large NimbleGen microarray data set profiling transcription patterns in 60 tissues of the inbred line B73. More information on the data set and the mappings can be found at the MaizeGDB site. This release also features the addition of Spanish and Japanese translations of the term names. All four (Plants, Arthropoda, Vertebrates and Bioinformatics) Working Group sessions ran concurrently to maximize the benefits of emerging results, group experiences and collective synergy. Semantic Web Workshop, June 6-7, 2011, Santa Fe, NM. The Plant Ontology was represented at the 2011 Semantic Web Workshop. Hosted by Damian Gessler and the iPlant Collaborative, this two-day workshop focused on biological applications for semantic web services. May 27, 2011 The latest release (Version #15) of the Plant Ontology is now available on our Ontology Browser. This release contains more than 80 new terms to accommodate pteridophytes and bryophytes. February 25-27, 2011 The Plant Ontology attended the inaugural meeting of the newly-funded Phenotype Ontology RCN at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, NC. The Phenotype Ontology RCN was funded by NSF to establish a network of scientists who are interested in phenotype ontologies. Jan 21, 2011 The latest release (Version #14) of the Plant Ontology is now available on our Ontology Browser. This release is aimed at restructuring the PO to accommodate all plants. January 15-19, 2011 The Plant Ontology attended the Plant and Animal Genome XIX Conference, in San Diego, CA. and hosted a Collaborators Workshop on Sunday Jan.16th. Also, we presented in the: Plant Phenotypes Workshop and at the Computer Demonstration and also presented a poster. Aug 12, 2010 Beta Version of New Release of Plant Ontology Database Now Available A beta version of the latest release of the PO is now available on our AmiGO Browser . PO-Gramene Annotation Workshop at Plant Biology 2010 A workshop to demonstrate the Phenote Annotation Tool was held at the ASPB Plant Biology Meeting in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. April 28, 2010 OBO files for Flowering Plants on the download page have been updated to version 1.2 of the OBO spec. No changes to terms have been made. A set of controlled vocabulary terms describing developmental stages of organs and organ systems of a 'generic' flowering plant is now available. April 28, 2005 First release of the Plant Growth Stages Ontology! A set of controlled vocabulary terms describing the whole plant growth stages of a 'generic' flowering plant is now available. This release encompasses Arabidopsis, soybean, maize, rice and Triticeae. Over 400 gene annotations to the new terms are also added to the POC database. Dec 16, 2004 Gene annotations for Arabidopsis, rice and maize associated to the Plant Structure Ontology terms are now available. Over 3,000 gene annotations from three species-specific databases, TAIR, Gramene and MaizeGDB, can now be queried and retrieved using our ontology browser, the Plant Ontology AmiGO. July 23, 2004 The Plant Structure Ontology is now available at the POC web site! This ontology is the first step in our effort to integrate existing species-specific vocabularies into unified ontology of flowering plants.
